Unlike Schlereth, Stokley rejects Fangio strategy of not watching ’18 film

Speaking from the NFL owners meetings this week in Arizona, Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio revealed he has deliberately avoided watching film of his team from 2018 as a strategy to not cloud his judgment on players heading into this season.
Said Fangio: “The only guys I’ve watched are guys we’ve had to make decisions on. But if the guy’s on our roster and he’s going to be on our roster, I want to form my own opinion. I don’t want to watch other stuff.”
And on Wednesday, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth lauded Fangio for the concept, saying he “found it interesting” and it afforded Broncos players to enter 2019 with a “clean slate.”
However, not all approved of the first-time head coach’s methods, like”Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley, who said,”Why not” look back on last year’s film?
“I know what he’s saying, but at the same time, it’s just like, why not? Why wouldn’t you look at what they did last year and kind of start thinking about how you’re going to use certain guys?” Stokley said. “I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t do that. So, to me, that’s a little bit confusing and odd, really odd, for a head coach not to have watched every single game multiple times.”
Stokley said he understands Fangio’s wish to not have preconceived notions about his players before he sees them on the practice field, but reviewing them on film is “kind of what you do.”
“You kind of want to watch them on film,” Stokley said. “And that’s not going to be the basis for everything. That’s not going to be the conclusion to the story. But you’re going to form an opinion on these guys.”
