ESPN’s Woody says Munchak will ‘do wonders’ for Broncos o-line

When Damien Woody made his first Pro Bowl as an offensive lineman for the New England Patriots in 2002, the first person waiting on him in the locker room was Mike Munchak, then the offensive line coach for the Tennessee Titans.

During what amounted to “pretty much a vacation” for most players and coaches, Munchak worked with Woody all week, the ESPN NFL analyst told “Schlereth and Evans” on Tuesday.

“… Mike Munchak was the one guy that literally coached me all week long because he was just excited to work with me,” Woody said.

On Tuesday, Woody became just the latest high-profile former player to laud the Denver Broncos for hiring Munchak this offseason as the team’s offensive line coach, saying “that might have been the best hire this whole offseason of all the coaches.”

“He’s going to do wonders for the Denver Broncos,” Woody said. “The Denver Broncos organization is fortunate to have a Hall of Famer like Mike Munchak.”

The comments come after last week, Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist and former Jacksonville Jaguars left guard Tony Boselli told “Pritchard and Cecil” that Munchak is “one of the best” in the NFL at coaching the offensive line.

“He will get that group working together and on the same page. I thought it was a great hire,” Boselli said.

And last month, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said Munchak “may be the most important hire of this offseason” for the Broncos, even more valuable than head coach Vic Fangio.

But, Schlereth said on Monday, hiring Munchak is just the first step. Next is putting the requisite talent along the line of scrimmage.

“Now you know what you have to do? You’ve got to get talent. And that should be the focus of the Denver Broncos,” Schlereth said. “Go get some offensive line talent in the draft, in free agency, where you have to find it. Spare no expense.

“Fix your line of scrimmage and win championships. That’s what they have to do next season.”
