Kubiak’s potential new coaching role with Broncos to elevate Keenum?

After an offseason of optimism surrounding then-new Denver Broncos quarterback Case Keenum, the 2018 campaign wasn’t friendly to the team’s signal-caller.

So, in an effort to salvage what’s remaining of Keenum’s time under contract in Denver — his deal expires after next season — could the Broncos be relying on Gary Kubiak, who may return to the sidelines in 2019 alongside newly hired head coach Vic Fangio, for a fix?

“I think that it is very big for Gary Kubiak to become the offensive coordinator given that you have Case Keenum,” said 104.3 The Fan host Orlando Franklin on Wednesday.

Kubiak and Keenum were paired together for the majority of two seasons with the Houston Texans in 2012 and 2013, with the coach bringing along the undrafted college free agent.

“Gary Kubiak is the one that believed in Case Keenum and brought him to Houston as a free agent and kind of groomed him and nurtured him,” Schlereth said. “So, I think there’s a real relationship there to say, ‘Can we get the best out of Case Keenum with Gary Kubiak running this offense?’”

Keenum, however, played in just seven games under Kubiak before the head coach was let go by the Texans.

In those seven games, Keenum threw for 1,592 yards, nine touchdowns, four interceptions, had a completion percentage of 54.34 and a passer rating of 83.7.

Coming off a career year with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, Keenum regressed to the mean a bit in 2018, going 6-10 in 16 starts while throwing for 3,890 yards (a career high), 18 touchdowns, 15 interceptions (a career high) with a completion percentage of 62.3 and a passer rating of 47.9 (a career low).
