Big Al wants Kingsbury type for Broncos, but he’s an ‘extreme dark horse’

Another NFL head coaching hopeful threw a wrinkle into the offseason interviews process on Monday as USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is reportedly expected to meet with multiple teams about their openings.

On Monday, “The Drive” co-host Alfred “Big Al” Williams said bringing in a guy like Kingsbury is something he wanted for the Denver Broncos in the team’s search for its next head coach.

“This is what I wanted for the team. I wanted a new coach like Kliff Kingsbury, and I wanted him to do the quarterback evaluation of this year’s NFL draft,” Williams said.

However, both Williams and his co-host, DMac, agreed it’s likely a longshot the Broncos would make a move to hire Kingsbury.

“I’d say that’s an extreme dark horse,” DMac said.

Williams said he hasn’t seen any “evidence” the Broncos are looking for the “most innovative coaches,” much like Kingsbury is expected to be.

“Nothing about this coaching search says that I’m getting an innovator. What I’m seeing in seeing in this coaching search is I’m getting somebody who’s been there and done that …” Williams said, adding that it’s like the hire of Vance Joseph all over again but a “senior version.”

Among the attributes Broncos general manager John Elway said he’s looking for in the team’s next head coach is experience.

“For me, I look for experience. I want the guys that understand the game, they understand Xs and Os but also have the ability to lead men,” Elway said during the team’s end of the season press conference early last week.

However, Williams said that he would be “a lot happier” if the team brought in a fresh perspective at the head coaching position.

“I need a new set of eyes to evaluate the quarterback position, and I need a new set of eyes to run the offense,” Williams said. “I just need a new set.”
