‘Zero’ chance Vance Joseph wants to play Garett Bolles, says Schlereth

Two weeks back, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth called Garett Bolles a “detriment” to the Denver Broncos, saying he’d sit down the second-year left tackle.

On Tuesday, following criticism of Bolles from Alfred “Big Al” Williams, Schlereth shared a similar message and that head coach Vance Joseph’s hands are tied when it comes to playing the former first-round pick.

“There is no way — zero — as a coach that you could want to play him,” Schlereth said, adding that if Bolles were a fourth- or fifth-rounder he would have been cut as a rookie.

Schlereth, however, didn’t say the Broncos need to “cut the guy” or give up on him, but because there hasn’t been improvement from Bolles it’s time to move on.

“You cannot tell me every week — week-in and week-out — that this is a meritocracy and we’re going to play the best players …” Schlereth said, “and you’re going to continue to shuttle that guy out there, who doesn’t know what he’s doing and has not made the requisite improvements in his game to earn the job, to earn the start on a week-to-week basis”

On Monday, Williams said: “There are some people who just keep on making habitual mistakes that you can’t trust to play. He’s a habitual offender. After this season, you’ve got to let him walk.”

Among the habitual mistakes is holding penalties. Bolles tied for the most in the NFL with seven last season and is currently tied for the most this season with four, per NFLPenalties.com.

“The point is this. The guy makes the same mistakes that he made as a rookie,” Schlereth said. “He’s led the league in holding call last year. He probably leads the league in holding calls right now as we currently stand. There are another four holding calls a game he should get. I think the refs almost feel sorry for him.”
