Schlereth: ‘Several things’ must happen to regret passing on Rosen

If Arizona Cardinals rookie Josh Rosen can be an All-Pro. If Rosen can be the missing link for the Arizona Cardinals. If Bradley Chubbs completely falls on his face in the NFL. Then Broncos Country might regret not drafting the quarterback over the pass rusher, says Mark Schlereth.

Reacting to Alfred Williams saying he has “buyer’s remorse” with the Broncos not drafting Rosen over Chubb, the “Schlereth and Evans” host said there are several steps before regret sets in for Denver.

“I think there are several things that have to happen. (Rosen’s) got to be outrageously good, Bradley Chubb has got to be really bad, and the Arizona Cardinals have to win,” Schlereth said Tuesday.

Schlereth did admit that most talent evaluators would have touted Rosen’s talent heading into the draft, along with his experience in a pro-style system and being the most “NFL ready” quarterback.

However, Rosen has his knocks as well, Schlereth said.

“He’s also had multiple concussions, missed a lot of games, took a lot of sacks …  You talk about Rob Gronkowski being an injury risk, this guy has a far more injury potential, in my mind, than Rob Gronkowski,” Schlereth said.

So, what will it take for Broncos Country to have “buyer’s remorse” with Chubb over Rosen? Schlereth said the quarterback has to be a “legit All-Pro.”

“Not only is he going to have to be a legit All-Pro, but I think Bradley Chubb is going to have to be less than effective,” Schlereth said. “He’s going to have to, essentially, be a bust for you to sit there and be able to make the claim.”

Williams’ remarks come after Rosen’s Cardinals teammate Patrick Peterson sung the young quarterback’s praises last week during the “Bickely & Marotta” program on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.

Peterson, himself a first-round draft pick, said Rosen “blew (his) mind” as he watched the rookie “orchestrate the offense in a proper manner” just weeks after being drafted No. 11-overall out of UCLA.

“The future is definitely here with the Cardinals,” Peterson said. “I just don’t know when he’ll get his shot.”

Because of that, Williams said passing up on Rosen could be the “biggest snafu” for the Broncos that’s imaginable.

“This young quarterback that they drafted at No. 11 is the guy that we could have had. It feels like a Dan Marino type of story that’s about to be written,” Williams said. “Nine teams in front of me passed on me.”
