What does QB Paxton Lynch’s progress truly mean for the Broncos?

Through three weeks of OTAs, among the buzz out of UCHealth Training Center has been Paxton Lynch’s play, specifically the Denver Broncos quarterback looking better than Chad Kelly and, possibly, as good as starter Case Keenum.

On Monday, NFL Network reporter James Palmer told “Stokley and Zach” that Lynch looked “more calm” and that his body language indicated he’s “much more comfortable with what he’s doing.”

Later, “The Drive” host DMac said that, even taking it with a grain of salt because it’s still OTAs in June, he’s not only seen Lynch as a better option than Kelly but that he’s not seen a “big difference” between him and Keenum.

“I heard about the attitude and the way Case Keenum is. OK, fine. I get that,” DMac said. “But, at least on the field, I haven’t been like blown away by anything I’ve seen.”

But, with the starting quarterback job not in question with Keenum’s arrival this offseason, what does Paxton Lynch’s progress truly mean?

“Do you want the guy who looks a lot better and a lot more calm and a lot more comfortable and he’s throwing better balls when he knows he’s the backup quarterback,” Palmer said, “as opposed to the guy who, when it becomes time to compete and he has to fight for it, that’s when you see him play at his is best?”

Palmer said he’d prefer the latter, whom he said Keenum was last season for the Minnesota Vikings.

“That’s what we saw from Case last year when it was, week in and week out, (Zimmer’s) over there going, ‘Well we’re not sure he’s our quarterback.’ And every week, it was almost like Case was like, ‘Oh, I’m not your quarterback? Alright, I’ll go out and do something,’” Palmer said. “And that was happening every week.

“That kind of is the mentality of Case, and I’m not sure that’s entirely the mentality of Paxton.”
