Broncos trade for Redskins’ safety Cravens official, terms announced

Mar 29, 2018, 1:59 PM

The Denver Broncos made official Thursday a trade with the Washington Redskins for safety Su’a Cravens.

Terms of the deal include the Broncos receiving Cravens and the Redskins fourth- (113) and fifth-round (149) picks in this year’s NFL Draft in exchange a 2018 fourth-rounder (109), two 2018 fifth-rounders (142 and 163), and a conditional pick in 2020.

Cravens, who turns 23 in July, appeared in 11 games (three starts) for Washington in 2016 but did not play a down for the team in 2017 after reportedly contemplating retirement.

The NFL reinstated Cravens from the Redskins exempt/left squad list in February, just before reports that Washington and Denver had been in talks about a trade.

At the time, Fan Football Insider Cecil Lammey reported sources indicated the jumping off point in terms of asking price for Cravens was a second-round pick, something at which “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley balked at, calling the idea “ludicrous.”

“Now, he’s a very talented guy, a second-round pick by the Redskins. A sixth-, seventh-round pick, OK,” Stokley said. “I’ll gamble. I’ll gamble on a guy like that. But other than that, no. No chance.”

Stokley also questioned “where his heart is” after not playing in 2017, saying, “A lot of his teammates questioned that last year. And, I think it’s safe to say a lot of his teammates thought he quit on them last year.

“DeAngelo Hall has come out and said he has to gain the locker room’s trust back. So, I look at a guy like that, and I’m not willing to give up a fifth-round pick.”

Hall told 106.7 The Fan in Washington in February there was “room for Su’a” on the Redskins roster, but his leaving the team would be “a tough thing for a lot of guys in this locker room to just look past.”

However, in a video posted to Twitter on Wednesday, Cravens seemed excited to be turning to a new chapter in his NFL career.

During his rookie season, Cravens racked up 33 tackles (23 solo), one sack, one interception, and five passes defensed.
