Report: McCarron wins grievance vs. Bengals, to become a free agent

Feb 15, 2018, 3:23 PM

Add another potential quarterback into the mix for the Denver Broncos, as A.J. McCarron has reportedly won his grievance against his soon-to-be former team, the Cincinnati Bengals.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport first reported the news, which means McCarron will become an unrestricted free agent in March, adding that the “ramifications are massive” for this offseason.

McCarron filed the grievance against the Bengals being, what he believes, improperly designated to the non-football injury list to start the 2014 season, his rookie year, with the implication that the quarterback suffered a shoulder injury away from the team.

Arguing that he was upfront about the shoulder issue, according to Cincinnati.com, McCarron believes he was improperly designated and, thus, missed an accrued year toward free agency.

In August, 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough reported that sources had told him the Broncos were “aggressively pursuing” a trade for McCarron, which was later denied by Denver general manager John Elway.

However, with McCarron now on the market, the Broncos — who have been tied to several quarterbacks, including Kirk Cousins, as potential upgrades at the position — are free to pursue the quarterback if they please.
