Schefter: Drafting 2 quarterbacks not a crazy idea for Broncos

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told “Schlereth & Evans” on Thursday the Denver Broncos woes of late can’t be boiled down to just the play at the quarterback position.

But despite Denver having “many different areas” in which they need to improve, who is under center is “easily is the most important issue that this team faces this offseason — finding a quarterback that it believes it can build around.”

With that in mind, Schefter said it’s not such a crazy suggestion to think the Broncos should take multiple quarterbacks in early rounds in next year’s NFL Draft.

“Well, they’re fortunate in this sense that it’s a very deep quarterback draft,” Schefter said. “If I were the Broncos, I would be picking two quarterbacks.”

Schefter pointed to the Washington Redskins 2012 draft class, wherein then-head coach Mike Shanahan selected Robert Griffin III second-overall and current starting quarterback Kirk Cousins 102nd overall in Round 4.

“When you are that deficient at that position, I think you’re better off taking two bites of the apple if there are two guys who believe in,” Schefter said.

“Now, again, you’re not just going to do it to do it, but if you’ve got a high grade on this guy in the first round and you get him, that doesn’t because you got a guy with a third-round grade who’s there in the fifth round that you don’t take him too.”

Of the quarterbacks currently on the Broncos roster, Schefter said he’d most like to see Trevor Siemian on his team, but maybe not as a 16-game starter.

“I think he’s a viable player. He reminds me a little bit of Gary Kubiak,” Schefter said. “Kubes made a great living for a long time as a very reliable No. 2 quarterback. I’m not trying to insult Trevor Siemian at all, but I think that’s sort of what you’re looking at.”

“He’s a good starter, but I don’t know if he’s capable of being a great starter in this league.”

Along with Siemian, Brock Osweiler, and Paxton Lynch, Denver does have a fourth quarterback — Chad Kelly — sitting on injured reserve, and one in which Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian said is “probably more talented than anybody (the Broncos have) got on the roster right now.”
