Schlereth: Broncos ‘lose every game’ if Siemian passes 50 times

Oct 17, 2017, 12:00 AM | Updated: 8:55 am

In a loss against the New York Giants on Sunday, Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian did what he’s only done twice before in his career: throw for 50 or more passing attempts.

Of the 20 games Siemian has registered a passing attempt, the third-year pro has only eclipsed 50 passes three times — Sunday against the Giants and twice last season, on the road against the San Diego Chargers and Tennessee Titans.

But aside from the common thread of 50 passing attempts, what links together those three games is a few columns over in the box score.

“You can’t have your quarterback going out there throwing 50 times,” Mark Schlereth said Monday. “If he has to throw 50 times, you’re going to lose every game.”

The “Schlereth & Evans” co-host said the Broncos could earn a playoff berth if they “keep fighting and figure it out,” but the offense needs to rally around its young quarterback.

“You’ve got to be a lot better up front with your offensive line. You’ve got to be a lot better in your running game,” Schlereth said. “You’ve got to be a lot better.”

In the three games Siemian passed 50 or more times, Denver rushed for 17 yards against the Titans, 46 yards on Sunday, and 84 yards against the Chargers.

And in the four games Siemian passed 40 or more times, wherein the Broncos lost all but one game, just twice did Denver barely eclipse the century mark.

On Monday, head coach Vance Joseph reinforced the point that despite a poor performance by Siemian on Sunday against the Giants there’s plenty of blame to share.

“It falls on the coaches and the players. Not just Trevor, but everyone,” Joseph said. When you have mistaken or negative plays on offense, it usually falls on two or three people. Not just the quarterback. But obviously, he’s the quarterback and at the end of the day, it definitely falls on his shoulders because he’s the quarterback.

“Mike (McCoy) is the coordinator, and I’m the head coach. It definitely falls on those individuals first, but it’s everyone. We have to coach better and play better in all three phases.”
