Former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak returns to team in scout role

Jul 25, 2017, 2:37 PM

Nearly eight months after standing in front of a crowd of colleagues, media, and family at the UCHealth Training Center to announce he’d be stepping down as head coach, Gary Kubiak is back with the Denver Broncos.

Kubiak, who cited health and family reasons to give up coaching, said that though he was “retiring from coaching,” that he still had “a lot to give” to the game of football.

“I’m going to find something else to do and I’m going to wake up with that same passion and do that, just like I’ve coached for the last 20-something years,” Kubiak said at the time.

On Tuesday, we learned about Kubiak’s new role in football, serving as a personnel advisor for general manager John Elway.

“It’s an honor for me to continue to be part of this great organization,” Kubiak said. “John and I talked long ago about any opportunity like this, and I’m very happy to be able to contribute on the personnel side.

“I said when I left that I still wanted to be involved in football. This gives me an opportunity to be involved with the game, and I’m excited to get to work.”

Elway, who inked a five-year extension on Monday, said Kubiak will be based out of his home in Texas and will make visits throughout the year to “participate in various personnel meetings.”

“With as much experience as he has evaluating players, Gary’s going to be a tremendous resource for our personnel department,” Elway said.

Kubiak will primarily be responsible for helping scout on the college side of things, Elway said, along with assisting in free agency.

In 22 years with the Broncos, Kubiak played nine seasons at quarterback (1983-’91), spent 11 seasons as offensive coordinator (1995-2005), and held the head coaching role for the previous two seasons.

Including leading his team to a Super Bowl 50 victory, Kubiak has contributed to all three of the Broncos world championships (1997, 1998, and 2015).
