Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar do something Avs haven’t done since 2002

Colorado Avalanche superstar teammates Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar accomplished something on Thursday night that the franchise hasn’t seen since 2002.

The NHL revealed its final awards for the 2024-25 regular season, and both MacKinnon and Makar made the First All-Star team. No Avs teammates had done that, both on the first team, since legends Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy during the 2001-2002 season.

For MacKinnon, it’s his fifth time making a postseason All-Star team and second consecutive season he made the first team.

In Makar’s case it’s also his fifth time accomplishing this, while also tying a Nordiques / Avalanche record making a first team for the third time. He joins Michael Goulet in that category, who played most of his career in Quebec before the franchise moved to Denver.

The Hart Trophy results were also released on Thursday evening, with Nathan MacKinnon finishing fourth overall and Makar at sixth. MacKinnon was snubbed from being nominated as an MVP finalist by a single point in the voting. He received 27 first-place votes while Makar was ranked as high as second on seven ballots.

Makar captured the Norris Trophy earlier this week, given to the NHL’s best defenseman, for a second time in his career. He made history in the regular season with 30 goals for a defenseman, the first time that’s been accomplished since 2009. MacKinnon finished with 116 points (32 goals, 84 assists) which was good for second in the league.

Overall, both Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar had monster seasons for the Avalanche. Coming up short in the playoffs once again will sting, but the Stanley Cup window is open as long as each guy is on the roster.

After all, just ask team president Joe Sakic.
