Sean Payton doesn’t ‘want to go through possible scenarios’ when it comes to QBs

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is playing his starting quarterback on Sunday.

Of course Bo Nix will be on the field as the Broncos look to lock up the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

And with the Los Angeles Chargers sitting quarterback Justin Herbert and other key starters, hopefully this one turns into a laugher.

If the Broncos are up big, Sean Payton could have the opportunity to turn to backups Jarrett Stidham or Sam Ehlinger to keep Nix healthy and fresh.

After practice on Friday, Payton was asked about that potentially happening, but didn’t want to get into it.

“I don’t want to go through possible scenarios, alright,” Payton said.

That makes sense. If the game is close, something the Broncos have done this year, Nix obviously has to play all four quarters.

At the same time, Payton was very complimentary of both Stidham and Ehlinger, noting both can play in the NFL even though they’ve held clipboards this year.

“They’ve been fantastic. And forget how they’ve been in the room, they’re real good players. That’s most important. You can be the greatest guy in the room, but if you can’t play then you just gotta be the greatest guy in someone else’s room,” Payton said.

In a perfect world, Stidham and perhaps even Ehlinger will get time on Sunday against the Chargers. That would mean the Broncos are up big and Nix is watching with a baseball cap on.

Sean Payton doesn’t want to speculate on that possibly happening, but if Denver handles business, we may see it play out that way.
