The Denver Broncos have at least called the San Francisco 49ers about wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

But it doesn’t sounds like he’s going to land in the Mile High City.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared those details in a social media post on Friday, saying the Commanders and Texans look like the favorites to land Samuel while the Broncos and Steelers “checked in” with the Niners.

Earlier this month it was reported that San Francisco had given Samuel and his agent permission to find a trade partner. He’s clearly played his last down with the 49ers, and with the NFL offseason ramping up it sounds like he could be moved relatively soon.

Another wrinkle to this is Samuel went on a Bleacher Report show about three weeks ago and raved about the Broncos.

“I could say Denver. Bo Nix is playing really, really good ball right now,” Samuel said when asked about a team that could be “special.”

Samuel went on to compliment the Broncos defense and Pat Surtain II, and said the team is a couple pieces away from being a true contender. Many speculated Samuel was referring to himself as one of those pieces and he had his eyes on heading to Denver. It could still happen, but it appears Washington and Houston are making more aggressive plays.

Samuel was a first-team All-Pro for the 49ers in 2021, catching a ridiculous 77 passes for more than 1,400 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for 365 yards and scored another eight touchdowns on the ground.

He didn’t put up numbers like that the last three seasons, but still caught at least 50 passes in all three campaigns and scored a combined 21 touchdowns, 12 receiving and nine rushing.

Perhaps Deebo Samuel could be the “joker” that Sean Payton is enamored in finding, but for now, him wearing a Broncos jersey might not be in the cards.

Stay tuned.
