Former Broncos starting cornerback gets another shot with Browns

Former Denver Broncos starting cornerback Damarri Mathis is getting another shot in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns.

The Broncos drafted Mathis in the fourth-round of the 2022 NFL Draft and he appeared in 43 games with the franchise — 18 of those were starts.

Overt three seasons in Denver, Mathis made 103 tackles and defended nine passes. He was a training camp cut late last August as head coach Sean Payton and GM George Paton built their roster.

Mathis was quickly claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers, but unfortunately tore his ACL mere days later and didn’t get on the field in 2025. Now, Cleveland takes a shot on the Pitt product as the Browns shuffle their roster heading into camp.

Obviously, Payton and Paton liked their cornerbacks room last season with All-Pro Pat Surtain II joined by Riley Moss, Ja’Quan McMillian, Jahdae Barron and Kris Abrams-Draine.

The Broncos spent a first-round pick on Barron in the 2025 NFL Draft, so it makes sense that Mathis was the odd man out. 

He had bad luck strike last year with the torn ACL in Carolina — hopefully Cleveland is a fresh start and a chance to return to NFL action.
