Davis Webb is ‘not proud’ of how the Broncos offense performed in Week 1

Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb had a rough time on Monday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Webb, making his debut as Denver’s OC and offensive play-caller, watched his offense score only 10 points in a 31-10 drubbing at Arrowhead Stadium.

Webb met with the media on Friday for the first time since the debacle and discussed it right at the top of his press conference.

“Yeah, obviously not good enough. Not proud of the result in a lot of phases. I probably had five play calls I’d love to have back. Execution, penalties, just not what you wanted to start with,” Davis Webb said.

Broncos QB Bo Nix passed for only 131 yards and one touchdown. He also threw an interception and fumbled the football three times, losing one of them.

But it wasn’t all on Nix. The running game was poor, accumulating only 61 yards total. J.K. Dobbins had just eight carries for 36 yards. Wide receivers Courtland Sutton and Jaylen Waddle combined for three catches for 13 yards.

A clean reset is needed between now and the Jaguars game on Sunday.

“We had a good camp, we felt like we had a good plan going in and it just didn’t time up well. There was a lot of positives in the game that maybe got called back or just unnecessary mental, physical things that kind of happened,” Davis Webb said.

Denver managed a lousy three points in the second half before Kansas City pulled away. Webb knows it must get fixed in a hurry.

“So, not good enough. We’re looking forward to this week though. We know it’s uncharacteristic of our guys. We’ve made a big emphasis of starting faster this year. And we kind of missed the first opportunity, but luckily we’ve got another one this week,” Webb said.

Jacksonville beat the Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High last season, so revenge is on the mind. But perhaps even more important is Davis Webb showing he’s up for the task of calling offensive plays.

If it goes badly again, the noise will only grow louder for Sean Payton to take that job back. Let’s hope it’s a moot point and Webb’s debut was simply a blip on the radar.
