Broncos WR Courtland Sutton glad to ‘knock that rust off’ with QB Bo Nix

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton had a great game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday.

Sure, it was the preseason finale, but the Denver starters played more than expected.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton was a little salty about why the offense was on the field for three series, but quite frankly, they needed the work.

Sutton had a big fourth-down conversion on the second drive that led to a field goal. And then in the second quarter, he and Nix connected on two big plays, the second which resulted in a 19-yard touchdown.

Overall, in a little more than a quarter of work, Sutton finished with four catches for 83 yards and a score. That’s an excellent outing.

The Broncos won 28-19, and backups like QB Sam Ehlinger and RB Audric Estime shined. Clearly, Courtland Sutton was happy for them.

“Yeah, man, it was great. We’ve been able to put together some really good games. It’s been fun watching all the different groups go out there and perform. I think our backups have had a really good preseason,” Sutton said.

Denver finished undefeated in the exhibition games, dominating the 49ers and Cardinals and the dispatching the Saints. Still, the first-team offense hadn’t exactly been crisp until that third series in New Orleans, so it was good to see.

“For Bo and I to finally put a couple of plays together, knock a little of that rust off going into the regular season,” Sutton said. “I feel like we have strong confidence because we’ve had a really good camp. I know that it hasn’t kind of shown itself through preseason, but we’ve had a really good camp.”

It finally did show itself late, something that’s key before Week 1 against the Titans looms in only 15 days.

“It was nice to be able to kind of put some of those plays together,” Sutton said. “I think there’s a lot of promise to come.”

That promise means big expectations, with Payton even talking about the Super Bowl this year. For now, the 2025 Broncos haven’t lost, even if it doesn’t count quite yet.

“It was really nice to be able to cap off a 3-0 preseason, taking this momentum into the rest of the season,” Courtland Sutton said.

Let’s see if that momentum leads to another playoff appearance, and this time, hopefully a deep postseason run.
