Broncos cut former basketball player they took a chance on at tight end

The Denver Broncos are moving on from tight end Caleb Lohner.

At least, for now.

The former basketball player turned football tight end didn’t make Denver’s initial 53-man roster, according to 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan insider Mike Klis.

Broncos have waived 7th-round rookie TE Caleb Lohner per source.

Lohner played just 57 snaps in his college football career with Utah, so spending a seventh-round draft pick on him was the definition of a flyer by Broncos GM George Paton and head coach Sean Payton.

With the Utes in 2024, Lohner caught four passes for 54 yards. Ironically, all four of those catches went for touchdowns. In the 2025 preseason with Denver, Lohner had one catch for 23 yards, but also a handful of penalties, perhaps not ready for the speed of the NFL game quite yet.

We’ll see if the Broncos look to bring Lohner back to the practice squad, as he feels like an ideal candidate to keep developing. But Lohner almost certainly won’t be in Denver’s plans on Sundays this season.
