Rockies’ Goodman clobbers Twins with three-homer night in 8-5 win

MINNEAPOLIS — Rockies Report, Game 83:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Hunter Goodman continued his scorching recent form, posting the 21st three-home run game in Colorado history to power the Rockies past the Minnesota Twins 8-5 at Target Field on Saturday night.

Having delivered one of the bombs that helped the Rockies scramble back to take a ninth-inning lead one night earlier, Goodman quickly picked up where he left off, clobbering his second and third home runs in succession in the first and third innings to put the Rockies in front 2-1. His streak of consecutive homers then ended with a fifth-inning grounder, but in the seventh-inning, he piled on, clobbering a Kody Funderberk offering into the left-field stands for a three-run shot that pushed the Rockies to a comfortable lead.

“Three homers, all of them absolutely crushed,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “When he gets going, he’s tough to slow down.”

The three-homer night was the 21st in Rockies history, and also pushed his season tally to 25 — the most for any NL catcher since the All-Star Break since Johnny Bench had 28 prior to the Midsummer Classic in 1970. He’s the fourth catcher in MLB annals to reach that milestone; Pudge Rodriguez is also in the club, as is Seattle’s Cal Raleigh, who accomplished the feat.

“That’s fantastic,” Schaeffer said. “You can’t say enough good things about ‘Goody’ and what he’s doing. I’m just so happy for him. I know how hard he works — and today he did it as a DH. There’s been some talk that he can’t hit when he’s DHing, but that ain’t true.”

Added Goodman: “It’s pretty awesome. Those are some of the all-time greats, and any time you can get your name mentioned with them, it’s pretty surreal.”

Colorado entered the day leading MLB in combined eighth-and-ninth inning runs, then added two for good measure to pad their advantage to 8-2 via Kyle Karros’ fifth home run of the season. That proved helpful after Zach Agnos struggled in the ninth, surrendering three runs on three hits and a walk before being relieved by Jimmy Herget, who doused the fire and picked up his third save of the season

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Michael Lorenzen had an unfortunate start to his work Saturday night — a leadoff infield single that took a high hop in front of second baseman Tyler Freeman, a pitch that got away and plunked Byron Buxton and a Kody Clemens RBI single before he could record his first out.

But after that, he found his form. He retired nine of the next 10 Minnesota batters he faced, and didn’t allow a Twin to get past first base again until the sixth inning, by which point Goodman’s bombs had staked him to a comfortable lead.

But after three hard-hit balls in the sixth inning, Schaeffer relieved Lorenzen after 92 pitches, leaving him an out shy of what would have been his second quality start in a Colorado uniform. Nevertheless, he earned his third win of the campaign against nine losses.

“He pounded the zone. He got ahead. He didn’t try to do too much,” Schaeffer said. “He was efficient with his pitches. He threw his sinker a ton and got some quick outs.”

Lorenzen had one strikeout, but he didn’t walk a batter.

“Didn’t hunt the punch out, which was great,” Schaeffer said. “… I thought Mike was very, very good tonight.”

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Herget retired the final two Twins batters to pick up the save.
