Rockies start road trip strongly as Senzatela preserves Lorenzen’s stellar start

Rockies Report, Game 27:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Troy Johnston’s 2-RBI single in the seventh inning that darted just underneath a diving Marcus Semien helped ensure that Michael Lorenzen’s quality start held up despite a late Mets comeback as the Rockies held on for a 4-3 win over the reeling New Yorkers at Citi Field on Friday night.

It was the Mets’ 13th defeat in their last 15 games after a 7-4 start, snapping their modest two-game winning streak. For the Rockies, it got their six-game, two-city Eastern Time Zone road trip off to a solid start after a dispiriting close to their seven-game homestand on Thursday afternoon.

For a moment, it looked like Friday’s game was headed in a similar direction. The Rockies led 4-1 heading in to the bottom of the eighth, but peppered reliever Jaden Hill, loading the bases with one out after three singles. Brett Baty then brought two runs home with a single to center field, leaving two on and one out.

But Antonio Senzatela doused the fire in two pitches, getting Mark Vientos to line out to Tyler Freeman at second base. Freeman stepped on the bag to complete the unassisted double play, and Senzatela completed a clean ninth inning in eight pitches for his second career save.

Colorado improved to 11-16, including 4-10 away from Coors Field.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The work Michael Lorenzen has been putting in between starts paid off in the Queens chill, as he worked efficiently over seven innings, turning in a 90-pitch outing in which he allowed seven hits without a walk and induced a pair of double plays.

Lorenzen dealt with extreme duress only in the second inning, when Brett Baty’s leadoff double and Mark Vientos’ soft infield single two pitches later put runners on the corners. The first double play of the night followed, allowing Lorenzen to escape from the jam with just one run on the board — the only one he’d permit all night.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Senzatela locked down the Mets in the ninth to drop his ERA for the season to 0.50.
