Rockies get first MLB homer from Carrigg, but it’s far from enough in 9-3 loss

Rockies Report, Game 69:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Seiya Suzuki’s fourth-inning grand slam at the expense of Ryan Feltner put the Cubs in front to stay, as the Rox couldn’t keep pace with Chicago’s middle-inning barrage and fell 9-3 in the series and homestand finale in front of 35,128 at Coors Field.

Chicago added a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings, while the Rox paid for their inability to capitalize on chances. In the first inning, they came up fruitless after having two on with one out. In the sixth, they squandered a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity. In the fourth inning, Troy Johnston was picked off and thrown out at second base; later in the at bat, the Rockies got the second of their three home runs.

Colorado pounded out 12 hits, but unlike the Cubs, couldn’t string them together to find the big blast. The Rox’ three runs came on solo homers — two by catcher Brett Sullivan and the first career MLB homer from Cole Carrigg, who made his Rockies debut Tuesday.

Colroado claimed the series, but finished the homestand 2-4 and fell to 26-43 overall.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Feltner mowed down the Cubs in the first three innings, slicing through the Cubs in 30 pitches for a perfect turn through the order. But it was a different matter on his second trip through the Cubs’ lineup, as six of Chicago’s nine batters reached base. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, and then Suzuki got a hold of a slider that elevated and landed in the top of the strike zone and launched it 400 feet deep and over the left-field fence.

It was Feltner’s roughest start since his return from the injured list. Suzuki’s homer was the first Feltner has allowed since returning; he surrendered five in his first five starts. Feltner fell to 2-2, and his ERA spiked to 5.20.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Alex Bregman pushed the Cubs’ advantage to 8-2 with his seventh-inning homer off reliever Blas Castaño.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.060 — Carrigg’s OPS for his first three games in the lineup. He went 2-for-4 on Thursday.

WHAT’S NEXT: A trip to face the A’s in Las Vegas. Colorado hasn’t officially named a starter; Gage Jump gets the nod against them. First pitch from Las Vegas Ballpark in Summerlin, Nev. will be at 8:05 p.m. MDT.
