The Rockies’ battered pitching corps can’t seem to catch a break.
On the day Ryan Feltner returned to the rotation to make his first start since April 23 after dealing with right-ulnar-nerve inflammation, the corresponding move ended up involving yet another injury to a pitcher, this one involving recent call-up Welinton Herrera, who heads for the 15-day injured list due to left-elbow inflammation.
Herrera’s injury comes two days after the Rockies transferred starter José Quintana to the 60-day injured list due to an elbow sprain that will not require surgery.
In his first three career major-league appearances after being promoted from AAA Albuquerque on May 25, Herrera had allowed two hits and a walk over 2 1/3 innings.
He made his major-league debut last Monday night in Los Angeles, pitching a full inning that night and again one night later. In his first Coors Field appearance on Friday night, he allowed a single and a walk over one-third of an inning before being relieved.
Herrera is the third Rockies reliever on the 40-man roster currently on the injured list, joining Jimmy Herget and Victor Vodnik.
Starter Chase Dollander is also on the 15-day injured list, with starters Quintana and McCade Brown and reliever Pierson Ohl on the 60-day injured list. Ohl underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this year; Brown is in his throwing program as he works his way back from a right-shoulder issue.
