Report: Rockies’ No. 1 prospect out for season with foot injury

The Rockies have plenty of hope invested in Ethan Holliday that he can someday become one of the pillars of their lineup. But now, Holliday’s path up their system has hit a detour.

Holliday’s recent foot injury — which landed him on the injured list earlier this week — will be a season-ender, as it is a stress fracture that will necessitate surgery, as first reported by Thomas Harding of MLB.com.

The Rockies’ first-round pick last year, Holliday had turned a corner in recent weeks after a slow start to the campaign.

After hitting .196 with a .616 OPS through April 23 for the Fresno Grizzlies this season — which followed a .239/.357/.380 line he posted over 18 games late last season — he’d hit .355 with a 1.211 OPS since then, and appeared to be at the cusp of earning a promotion to high-A Spokane.

Unfortunately for the Rockies and the scion of Rocktober legend Matt Holliday, that advancement will have to wait until next year.
