Rockies’ top prospect Ethan Holliday goes on IL

The Colorado Rockies’ top prospect has hit speed bump.

Single-A Fresno placed Ethan Holliday on the 7-day injured list Sunday with a left foot injury, putting the 19-year-old infielder’s hot streak on hold.

Holliday hadn’t appeared in a game in nearly a week before the move was made official. The Rockies have yet to release a specific diagnosis, leaving the timetable for his return uncertain.

The injury comes at an inopportune moment for the fourth overall pick from the 2025 MLB Draft, who had been surging up national prospect rankings. Holliday is slashing .262/.395/.557 with nine home runs, 23 walks and 32 RBI in 33 games this season at Fresno, where he’s playing as one of the youngest hitters in the California League — roughly two years younger than his average competition.

The lone concern in his statistical profile has been a 28.3 percent strikeout rate, though his .395 on-base percentage and .952 OPS have more than offset the swing-and-miss.

Holliday was just named the only Rockies player in ESPN’s updated top 50 MLB prospect rankings last week, checking in at No. 27 overall after climbing nearly 40 spots from his preseason ranking. He also sits at No. 24 on MLB.com’s list and No. 80 on Baseball America’s pre-2026 rankings.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel wrote that Holliday “has been scorching hot the past three weeks, with seven home runs,” drawing comparisons to Braves slugger Austin Riley.

For a Rockies organization stumbling through another miserable big-league season at 20-35 and on pace for a fourth straight 100-loss campaign, Holliday’s development is one of the few reasons for optimism. Getting him healthy and back on the field is the most important thing going on anywhere within in the Rockies franchise.
