Rockies’ Goodman lines out in his sole at-bat in All-Star Game

For the sole Rockies representative in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, it was one pitch, one out.

Catcher Hunter Goodman strode to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning for his first and only plate appearance in what would be a 4-0 loss for the National League and promptly lined into the glove of  Detroit Tigers shortstop Kevin McGonigle fielded for the second out of the inning.

With a runner on first base, it represented one of the few chances the NL had to make a dent in the American League’s advantage. The All-Stars from the junior circuit peppered Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez with three singles and drew two walks in the top of the first inning, with three runs coming home to put the NL in a hole before it came to bat.

Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox added the AL’s final run with a 433-foot eighth-inning blast to the second deck off Justin Wrobleski of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The NL didn’t have a single plate appearance with a runner in scoring position.

NO ROCKIES PLAYER HAS REACHED BASE IN AN ALL-STAR GAME SINCE 2023

Ryan McMahon, the team’s ASG representative in 2024, struck out in his only appearance in that year’s game.

Of course, in 2023, catcher Elias Díaz took home MVP honors in the NL’s 3-2 win that year, entering as a pinch hitter and clobbering a Félix Bautista offering to flip a 2-1 deficit into a victory for the senior circuit. That made him the first All-Star Game MVP in Rockies history.

Colorado resumes its season Friday night, beginning a three-game series at Coors Field against the Cincinnati Reds.
