Rockies’ Goodman earned his All-Star berth the hard way — by mashing more away from Coors Field

You can’t say that Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman earned his second-consecutive All-Star Game appearance because he’s a product of Coors Field.

Goodman’s home-road splits in approaching Hall of Famer Johnny Bench for the National League record in home runs prior to the All-Star Game by a catcher are the reverse of what you’d expect. He has a .741 OPS at home and a .989 OPS on the road. Eighteen of his 27 homers have come away from Coors Field.

His batting average is 68 points higher on the road. He slugs 210 points better in away games than in home games.

So, when Goodman says he can be “better” given his form to date — especially in a sizzling June when he posted a .993 OPS after logging a mere .647 mark during a flummoxing May — it would seem to start with getting the Coors Field bump that has helped many a slugger.

“There’s a lot of things that I can be better at. But yeah, it’s really cool,” Goodman told media in the clubhouse after the game. “It’s an awesome opportunity, and to go back-to-back, it’s a blessing.”

GOODMAN IS THE ROCKIES’ ONLY ALL-STAR REPRESENTATIVE

Once again, Goodman will carry the Rockies’ banner into the Midsummer Classic by himself.

Last year, Goodman became just the second catcher in club history to make the All-Star Game, following Elias Díaz in 2023 — the year he became the Rox’ only All-Star Game MVP.

That’s a move that might make sense on a spreadsheet, but not in the reality where morale is a factor.

Outfielder Mickey Moniak was in the conversation, but his recent injured-list stint and slow start in his return before an outburst in the three days leading up to Saturday’s loss put the 2016 No. 1 overall pick in a bad spot. Still, his .945 OPS is impressive. Reliever Antonio Senzatela also could have earned ASG consideration before his recent slump.

But in the end, there was no other choice to make than that of Goodman, who is under team control via arbitration years through 2029.

ESPN suggested that the New York Yankees trade for Goodman in an article earlier this week.
