Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman has put together one heck of a June to lead the club’s offense to its best month of the year so far. After Goodman had been putting up decent numbers to kick off the year, he found a rhythm with his bat that raised a question of whether or not he could potentially be the club’s (likely) lone All-Star.
The MLB announced the finalists for the All-Star ballots, and Goodman’s name was not one of the two catchers on the list. Instead, the Dodgers’ Will smith and the Cubs’ Carson Kelly were named as the two finalists.
Here are your All-Star Ballot FINALISTS!
Phase 2 voting opens Monday, 6/30 at noon ET and closes on Wednesday, 7/2. Vote totals reset.

While the rest of the Rockies offense has been lethargic for most of the season, Goodman has been raking. For the season, he’s slashing .287/.332/.512, but those numbers have been way up in the month of June, with a slash line of .342/.373/.734. However, his production has been fairly one-sided, as he leads all catchers in errors (6) and has just a .981 fielding percentage.
The Rockies social media team, which has been very active this season, recently posted a call for more votes for the catcher. As it turns out, it didn’t work that well.

Smith has been the best catcher in the NL this year, and it’s not close. Him being a finalist is something that shouldn’t be a debate with his outstanding .325/.422/.533 slash line and .991 fielding percentage. He has also turned the most double plays by any catcher this year, with six.
For Kelly, that’s where the real debate can be had on who deserves that second spot. Kelly is slashing .258/.361/.466 but has a fielding percentage of .997 for a Cubs team that is currently in first place in the NL Central. While Goodman has been hot as of late, Kelly has had a completely opposite season in the batter’s box, as he is currently slumping after flying out of the gates.
These finalists are determined by fan voting, and the Dodgers and the Cubs have two of the biggest fanbases in the entire league, while the Rockies have a bunch of people who go to this bar named Coors Field and happen to tune in to the baseball game that’s going on at the same time. The Dodgers have seven (!!) finalists on the board, a number that shows the flaws behind the MLB putting so much weight into the fan vote.
This doesn’t mean that Goodman won’t be an All-Star, it just means that he will be a reserve catcher if he were to get in, which is up to the Commissioner’s office to decide. It’s between him and relief pitcher Jake Bird for the Rockies’ spot, and with Goodman having tons of momentum as opposed to Bird, there’s still a great chance the slugger is the club representative who makes the trip down to Atlanta.
