Rockies fall to Dodgers as Ohtani launches another homer at their expense

Unfortunately for the Rockies, Coors Field keeps bringing out the best in the four-time MVP.

Rockies Report, Game 126:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Shohei Ohtani went yard for a second-straight night with a two-run homer that pushed the Dodgers to an eventual 7-4 lead, enough to withstand a late rally from the Rockies that fell just short in a 7-6 Colorado loss at Coors Field on Tuesday night.

The potential winning run came to the plate in the ninth in the form of TJ Rumfield, but he popped out to Mookie Betts at shortstop with Willi Castro at first base, squelching the Rockies’ hopes of forcing extra innings or giving the home fans some walk-off heroics.

Early in the contest, the Rockies had an answer for everything the Dodgers did. After Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly put Los Angeles up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, Colorado responded immediately, with Cole Carrigg’s RBI double bringing home Jake McCarthy — who’d reached on a leadoff single — to knot the game at 1-apiece.

Ohtani’s third-inning home run was quickly answered by RBI doubles from Rumfield and Connor Norby, knotting the score at 3-apiece after three innings.

But the Dodgers pummeled Colorado starter Ryan Feltner in the fourth inning, opening with three-consecutive doubles and a walk before Feltner could finally record an out. Los Angeles plated three runs to go in front 6-3, and the Rox were in chase mode from there.

Willi Castro’s solo homer in the fifth brought the Rox within 6-4, and after a Freddie Freeman RBI single increased the Los Angeles edge back to three runs, RBI singles from Zac Veen in the eighth and Castro in the ninth brought the Rox back within a run.

But that was as far as their comeback went. Colorado fell to 50-76.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Navigating traffic for much of the night, Feltner allowed eight hits and three walks over five-plus innings. All seven runs were charged to him, as Warren Schaeffer lifted him for Parker Mushinski following Teoscar Hernández’s leadoff triple in the sixth inning.

Feltner has yielded at least five earned runs in three of his last six starts; in that span, his ERA is 9.11, and his season-long ERA has risen from 4.44 to 5.97.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Rumfield popped up for the final out.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.175 — Veen’s OPS since his call-up, as he added an RBI single in a pinch-hitting appearance.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Freeland and Roki Sasaki will get the ball in Wednesday night’s series finale. It will also conclude the season-long series between the clubs. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
