The Rockies bullpen has been rock-solid in wins against Miami

The Colorado Rockies have been on a roll — for their standards — down in Miami this week, as they secured their first sweep in 386 days. Hunter Goodman led the charge on offense, but the bullpen put together three strong outings to help out the offense.

The bullpen saw 12.2 innings of action in the three wins and didn’t let up a single earned run. Viktor Vodnik got the win for Colorado on Tuesday, while Zach Agnos, Tyler Kinley and Seth Halvorsen each recorded a save.

After Tuesday’s win, Rockies Interim Manager Warren Schaeffer had a lot of praise for the group effort from the pen.

“The bullpen has been really good, the chemistry is really good down there,” Schaeffer said. “You have two veterans in Jimmy [Herget] and [Tyler Kinley] that lead the charge down there and teach the guys what’s going on and how to get themselves ready, how to pump the brakes maybe, sometimes down there getting ready. The young guys are doing a great job.”

Herget went 1.2 innings in Tuesday’s win, striking out a pair, while Kinley went three-up three-down in an inning of action on Monday. Herget did let up four hits, but managed to hold his ground when it mattered most to prevent any runs from scoring.

The bullpen consists of the five pitchers who have the lowest ERA for the Rockies (minimum 10 appearances) in Herget, Juan Mejia, Vodnik, Agnos and Jake Bird. Agnos is the best of that bunch with a 1.50 ERA while Vodnik rounds at the group sitting at 3.18. The Rockies have the eighth-best bullpen in the National League in terms of ERA.

The theme is flipped from the start of the season when Colorado had one of the best starting rotations in the league, but didn’t get any help from the relief pitchers.

As the Rockies continue to try and build some momentum after a strong outing in Miami, they will need to bullpen to keep up the strong efforts to give themselves a chance to win. They will have to face much tougher lineups than what the Marlins have to offer, but momentum can go a long way in America’s pastime.
