Rockies snap streak of 22 consecutive series losses, get second consecutive win

Rockies Report, Game 61:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: After 22 consecutive series, the Colorado Rockies finally emerged victorious.

And for the second consecutive night, Hunter Goodman led the way.

The slugging catcher — who continues to make a case to be the team’s All-Star Game representative, nudging his OPS back above .800 — clubbed an eighth-inning Anthony Bender offering over the left-field wall for the decisive run in a 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

“He’s just raking,” center fielder Brenton Doyle said on the Rockies.TV broadcast after the game.

Goodman’s blast — his third in two days — ensured that an outstanding night from Colorado’s bullpen stood up. For a second straight evening, Colorado’s relievers shut down the Marlins.

Tuesday, Juan Mejia, Jimmy Herget, Victor Vodnik and Seth Halvorsen combined to produce six scoreless innings of relief, stacking atop the four scoreless innings from the bullpen Monday.

Halvorsen got the closing nod with Zach Agnos on bereavement leave.

Herget allowed four hits in 1 2/3 innings of work, but escaped trouble thanks in part to Vodnik, who entered with two outs and runners on first and second in the seventh inning and induced an Agustin Ramirez groundout.

That preserved a 2-2 deadlock, setting up Goodman’s moment.

In front of a sparse crowd generously announced at 7,583, the win was preserved by Doyle, who ran down Heriberto Hernandez’s 402-foot shot to deep center field for a leaping grab for the final out.

Colorado’s other two runs came in the fifth inning, brought home via an RBI single from Jordan Beck and a sacrifice fly from Thairo Estrada.

Colorado is 11-50.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Chase Dollander’s return didn’t last long,

Struggling with command in his first game back from the injured list, his night came apart in the third inning. After walking one batter in the first inning and working a 1-2-3 second frame, Dollander opened the third by issuing free passes to Nick Fortes and Javier Sanoja.

A Jesus Sánchez single brought home Fortes. Another run came home via fielder’s choice; a third run scored on a Kyle Stowers RBI single.

Interim manager Warren Schaeffer opted to relieve Dollander after the 33-pitch inning. The rookie avoided his bugaboo, as he didn’t allow a home run for the first time in his last three starts.

“He just couldn’t get in rhythm,” Schaeffer said. “I just wanted to take care of him coming off the IL.”

ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 5 — Strikeouts by the Colorado lineup, the second-fewest of the season and the fewest since May 8, when the lineup fanned four times.
