Bud Black: The Rockies players have to “do a little better” to stay in the win column

The Colorado Rockies won their fifth game of the season on Wednesday night, and manager Bud Black said postgame that he needs more players to perform better if the team wants to keep winning

The Colorado Rockies avoided the wrong side of MLB history on Wednesday night as they held on for a 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. A lot would’ve continued their historic losing streak and put them in rare air as one of two teams to start an MLB season with a 4-26 record (1988 Baltimore Orioles).

After the win, Rockies manager Bud Black spoke to the media after the Rockies “hard fought win” and had an interesting thing to say about the players on his roster.

“We just don’t have enough guys playing well. For us to get going, we have 26 players, they all have to do a little better,” Black said after the win. “Maybe not all 26, but we need a higher majority of the guys to perform. Right now, we only have a few.”

Black, who has the Rockies on pace to lose at least 87 games for the sixth consecutive year (not counting the COVID-shortened 2020 season, in which the team still finished under .500), didn’t mention anything about how he and his coaching staff could help the players “do a little better.”

The Rockies organization recently fired their hitting coach in an effort to improve the team’s lack of scoring. Since the firing, Colorado has played 12 games. In those 12 games, the club has scored five or more runs just twice (and lost both of those games). The Rockies are averaging 3.7 runs per game in those 12 games with Clint Hurdle as the new man in charge of the hitting, which is an improvement from the 2.9 runs they were averaging before the coaching change, but a number that would rank 24th in the league.

What’s it going to take for Black to take some accountability on his team’s performance? What’s it going to take for anyone on the coaching staff or in the front office to take some accountability on how the Rockies are on pace to be one of the worst teams in the history of baseball?

This answer from Black showed why this team hasn’t won anything since 2018 when the Rockies were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. He’s expecting his players to perform better, but not changing the old ways that he’s stuck in coaching-wise to help those guys perform better.

The Rockies are back in action in the Bay on Thursday night as they take on the San Francisco Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Denver time.
