Broncos will begin training camp with two players on reserve lists

Two Broncos players will start training camp off the 90-player roster.

Offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo will begin camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, 11 months after he suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament during the Broncos’ preseason game against Arizona last August.

Gargiulo’s status is not a surprise, given the nature of his injury and his potential recovery. But inside linebacker Jordan Turner being on the non-football injury list is news, as he was healthy and available for OTAs and minicamp last month.

Both transactions were listed on the NFL’s official transaction wire Sunday afternoon.

Turner played in seven regular-season games and both playoff contests for the Broncos last year. Over the course of his nine games, he saw 153 special-teams snaps and 23 on defense, with all but six of those defensive plays coming in the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers last January.

Turner is in a tough spot, as one of a crowded field of undrafted and late-round linebackers acquired in recent years.

Behind starters Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad, the Broncos have Turner, Karene Reid, Levelle Bailey and rookies Red Murdock and Taurean York. Of that quintet, only Murdock was drafted — and he came aboard with the final pick of this year’s draft.

Some culling of the group was to be expected with the cut to the 53 players and the setting of the practice squad. Losing snaps will not help Turner’s chances, despite his experience from last year.
