The Broncos and the rest of the league face the unkindest cut now that the preseason slate is at its end — trimming their rosters to 53 players.
And for Sean Payton, the process is more difficult than it was when he arrived three years ago.
“I look back to my first year here, and we were looking to claim. We’ll find spots and that was like that in New Orleans early on and as you build something that gets a little bit more polished … gradually the quality of your team, it becomes a harder roster to make,” Payton said.
“So, those teams out there that have new coaches that are rebuilding, they’ll be more active and those are the teams sometimes that can end up with one of your players.”
Thus, players the Broncos may want back to their practice squad may not be available.
In advance of the 4 p.m. MDT roster deadline Sunday, the Broncos began making their roster moves Saturday afternoon.
The roster deadline is on a Sunday for the first time since 2004.
