Broncos coaches Shanahan, Reeves advance in Hall of Fame selection process

Broncos coaches Mike Shanahan and Dan Reeves moved a step closer to Hall of Fame selection out of the coaches subcommittee.

Former Broncos coaches Mike Shanahan and Dan Reeves have legitimate Pro Football Hall of Fame credentials based upon other coaches who are already in the Hall.

Reeves is the only coach to make four Super Bowl appearances without a win to not be enshrined, while Shanahan is a two-time Super Bowl winner whose coaching tree is the most robust in the current NFL.

Both of them advanced to the next stage of selection for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as each are among the five finalists to be the one coach presented by the Hall’s coaches subcommittee for potential selection by the full group of voters.

The subcommittee will meet Nov. 17 to select one from the five finalists.

Joining Reeves and Shanahan are:

  • Bill Belichick
  • Mike Holmgren
  • Tom Coughlin

The presence of Belichick would seem to make it difficult for Reeves and Shanahan to advance any further in the current cycle, which would lead to a potential induction next summer.

Coughlin, like Shanahan, has two Super Bowl wins as a head coach. Belichick amassed six during his 24-season run with New England. Holmgren guided his teams to three Super Bowls, winning one with Green Bay while losing Super Bowl XXXII to Shanahan’s Broncos and Super Bowl XL as Seahawks head coach to the Pittsburgh Steelers, led by Bill Cowher, who was a part of the expanded Centennial Hall of Fame class in 2020.

Making it out of the coaches subcommittee offers no guarantee of selection by the full body of voters. Holmgren advanced from this group in 2020 and 2025, but was not chosen for induction either time.

If any of the five finalists are selected, they would become the first coach selected for the Hall of Fame since Don Coryell in 2023.
