Sean Payton would like if Broncos didn’t ‘constantly’ need to comeback in games

"It'd be nice to play well earlier and not constantly put ourselves in that position," Sean Payton said of all the Broncos rallies thus far

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton likes the fourth quarter comebacks from his team.

He’s also sick of them like a lot of the fanbase.

The Broncos are 3-2 on the season, but have needed fourth quarter rallies against the Jaguars, Rams and Chargers to earn those victories.

On one hand, it shows resiliency. Denver is never out of it with an elite defense and quarterback in Bo Nix who seems to shine in pressure situations.

But on the other side of the coin, a complete game where the Broncos are the better team from start to finish would be nice for the coaching staff and Denver’s supporters.

After practice on Tuesday, Payton was asked about all the comebacks and gave a revealing answer. He briefly mentioned the positive, but then focused on the negative.

“I like the fact that there’s that confidence that you’re in a game. And then, we talked at the onset of the season I think, you guys heard it from me that it’d be nice to play well earlier and not constantly put ourselves in that position,” Sean Payton said.

Up 10-3 against the Chargers on Sunday at halftime, the Broncos found themselves down 17-10 in a blink. Luckily, they rallied for an ugly 23-17 win.

Payton pointed out that the NFL remains unpredictable and every contest brings something unique.

“Each week, the opponent can vary, the game can unfold differently. And so sometimes that happens where you’re at halftime and you would’ve never projected that score,” Sean Payton said.

Those halftime scores have included a 10-3 deficit to Jacksonville and a 16-0 hole against the L.A. Rams. Even the lead after two quarters last weekend was gone in a hurry.

It’s like a broken record talking about the Broncos needing faster starts, but it’s still on the mind of Sean Payton.

The good news is in just about 48 hours Denver gets another shot with the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks coming to town on a short week.

If it opens slow at Empower Field at Mile High, Broncos Country might be in a booing mood, which wouldn’t be unfair or out of bounds.
