Sean Payton says Broncos loss is ‘frustrating’ regardless of who’s calling plays

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton handed off play-calling duties to new offensive coordinator Davis Webb this offseason.

In Week 1, it looked like a disastrous decision.

The Broncos were throttled by the Chiefs 31-10, dropping to 0-1 on the young 2026 season. The defense was terrible, missing 28 tackles, but the offense wasn’t any better.

Broncos QB Bo Nix had a dud evening, throwing for only 131 yards and an interception, plus he lost a fumble.

The Webb experiment is off to a poor start, so logically Sean Payton was asked about it multiple times postgame. The first questions was framed about what the adjustment was like not calling offensive plays after doing it for decades.

“Just as a head coach always, whether you’re calling the plays or you’re not. Regardless of who’s calling the plays. When you have a game like that, and you’re the head coach, you know it’s frustrating. It’s disappointing. And I don’t know that the feeling is any different, whether you’re calling them or not. Honestly,” Sean Payton said.

He’s rightfully pointing out the Broncos got destroyed and he’s the head coach, so the emotions are frustration and disappointment. The fanbase is feeling the same way right now, wondering what all the Webb hype was about.

Payton was later asked how he and Webb go about fixing a pitiful offense in the first game.

“I think no different than a player. You know, just evaluating the first half, the first quarter, the game and then making the corrections and learning,” Sean Payton said.

The Broncos better learn fast. A talented Jaguars team comes to town next week. And if the offense isn’t fixed quickly, Denver could be staring an 0-2 start right in the face.
