The Denver Broncos took the AFC West from the Kansas City Chiefs last season and Courtland Sutton says people still don’t believe in them.

“We may have won the division last year, but there still doesn’t feel as if there’s this respect of, ‘The Broncos are a really good football team,'” the veteran wide receiver said Wednesday. “I think people are still thinking that … there was this fluke of what happened last year.”

He hasn’t forgotten it.

“We got to show up each week and go show everybody and prove to ourselves that we are who we say we are at the end of the day, and that last year wasn’t a fluke,” Sutton said. “It’s one of those things that we have to go stand up and stand on 10 toes that we are who we say we are week in, week out. And this weekend, it’s against the Chiefs.”

Sunday is a good time to prove it. The 5-2 Broncos host the 5-1 Chiefs at 2:25 p.m. MST at Empower Field at Mile High. First place in the AFC West is on the line.

It’s also a rematch of a Week 1 31-10 loss to KC that Sutton didn’t sugarcoat.

“If we don’t, we’re gonna get embarrassed like we did last time, which is not what we want to happen,” Sutton said.

But it’s not about the Broncos getting their lick bask so much as it’s just the next game on the schedule.

“I wouldn’t say revenge or vendetta,” Sutton said. “It’s the next one. You know, it’s the most important one because it’s the next one… They’ve seen our film of throwing punches. We’ve seen their film throwing punches. It’s being able to take a hit, get back up and keep swinging and keep fighting all the way to the end. And I know that we have the character and the fight in that locker room.”

Even after the Broncos scored 30 in Arizona over the weekend Sutton thinks the maligned offense has more meat left on the bone.

“When this thing fully clicks,” he said, “it’s gonna be a lot of fun going out there.”

The Chiefs come in having lost their last game to Seattle. For the Broncos, Sunday is a chance to show Sutton is right and take back the top spot in the West.
