JuJu Lewis delivers great one-liner on ESPN after game-winning touchdown at Georgia Tech

For three quarters Thursday night, JuJu Lewis looked like exactly what the doubters expected — a redshirt freshman making his first start of the season, overwhelmed on the road in a hostile environment.

Then he delivered what might end up being one of the best drives of Week 1 in college football and he had the quote to match it.

Lewis connected with tight end Charlie Williams on a 20-yard touchdown with 37 seconds remaining to give Colorado a 14-13 lead over Georgia Tech. Boo Carter blocked a 45-yard field goal at the buzzer to seal the win. While Lewis’ strike caught people’s eyes, Lewis’ ESPN postgame sideline interview with Paul Carcaterra will catch people’s ears.

Asked about the game-winning play, the 18-year-old said this:

“Coach Marion beat them with the play. I beat them with the ball. It’s just how ball works. Charlie made a great catch — touchdown.”

From Carrollton, Georgia — about an hour from Bobby Dodd Stadium — playing in front of family, friends, fans and a lot of hostile haters in his home state. He had thrown for fewer than 70 yards entering the final drive. He had no timeouts. He and Marion made it work.

“We knew we were going to score,” Lewis told Carcaterra. “Having confidence in my teammates, having confidence in Coach Marion, having confidence in Coach Prime, having confidence in the offense … we trust each other, we work for it, we knew what was going to happen.”

Lewis finished the night 14-of-27 for 124 yards and the touchdown. It’s not an impressive stat line but it’s a memorable first win and the moment will last.

The five-star recruit who was originally committed to USC before Deion Sanders flipped him was the Buffs’ big hope coming into the season. For 58 minutes, it looked false. Until 90 seconds later proved Lewis could bring some of the same magic Shedeur Sanders had.

What’s next: Colorado hosts Weber State at Folsom Field next week in its home opener.
