Deion Sanders takes the blame for Buffs’ skid, but points finger at Julian Lewis for his future

Deion Sanders kept saying the same three words at his Buffs presser on Tuesday: That's on me

Deion Sanders kept saying the same three words Tuesday: That’s on me.

He said it about the penalties, the struggling cornerbacks and the second-half collapse at Oklahoma State. He also said it about a five-game losing streak that has Colorado at 2-5 and 0-4 in the Big 12 before Saturday’s home game against Kansas State.

“We’re not happy tremendously with where we are,” Sanders said. “It’s just not going our way right now. And that’s on me.”

When asked about his coordinators, he defended them.

“Please give me all the responsibility,” Sanders said. “Put it on me, man. I’m good. My shoulders are good.”

There was one exception. When asked whether benched quarterback Julian Lewis could get another chance to run the offense, Sanders changed one word.

“That’s on him,” he said. “It’s a great question, but that’s on him.”

Lewis, a former five-star recruit, started Colorado’s first four games before Isaac Wilson replaced him at halftime against Baylor on Sept. 26. He hasn’t played since and has dropped to third string. Colorado has lost all three games Wilson has started.

Sanders pushed back on any idea that he had been unfair to Lewis.

“I don’t treat people unfairly. I don’t play games with young men in their careers,” he said. “If I’m anything, I’m too forgiving and very, very kind.”

When asked whether Lewis has fought to win the job back, Sanders wouldn’t answer.

“If you answer that, you may say I’m taking a shot at a kid, and I’m not going to do that,” he said. “I’m so honest that honesty gets you in trouble. … You guys do your homework.”

So the Buffs will likely keep moving on without Lewis, who promised to be the next big thing after Shedeur Sanders under center. While Coach Prime may point the finger at Lewis for his issues, it’s worth remembering the boss wanted to take credit for personally signing every player on the roster? If the Buffs have the wrong player under center — that too, is on Sanders.
