The Colorado Avalanche made history on Tuesday night.

Again.

By defeating the Utah Mammoth 1-0, the Avs now have the most points ever at the Christmas break since the NHL implemented it during the 1972-73 season.

It’s absolutely insane that the Avalanche have 61 points this early in the season, plus only two regulation losses. Not since the 1929-30 Boston Bruins has a team reached 60-plus points in this few games.

Goaltender Scott Wedgewood played hero against the Mammoth, stopping all 32 shots he faced. Wedgewood continued his outstanding season, one that’s getting him consideration for Team Canada in the upcoming Olympics.

The Avalanche didn’t generate much offense, but didn’t need it. Defenseman Samuel Girard scored a breakaway goal for the only tally of the night. It went unassisted, so Girard registered the lone point.

Colorado will now get a few well-earned days off before returning to action on Saturday night in Vegas against the Golden Knights.

And with their torrid pace, anything feels possible in terms of regular season success. Doing things we haven’t seen in nearly 100 years is just another chapter in an already remarkable season.
