Avalanche win and do something the NHL hasn’t seen since 1979-80 season

It’s getting hard to describe just how good the Colorado Avalanche are this season.

The Avs won again on Tuesday night, dispatching the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 3-1 at Ball Arena.

Fresh off his November First Star of the Month honors, Nathan MacKinnon had two goals to give him a ridiculous 22 through 26 games on the year.

Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog stayed hot, adding a pair of assists. Brock Nelson is in a groove as well, scoring his ninth goal.

Colorado goalie Scott Wedgewood had to leave the game early with an “upper-body injury,” but Mackenzie Blackwood came in and didn’t allow a Vancouver tally the rest of the way. There was some speculation Wedgewood might simply be sick, but head coach Jared Bednar cited some back tightness postgame. Bednar added “better safer than sorry” on the decision to pull Wedgewood.

However, the story of the night is Colorado still only has one regulation loss on the year. They made NHL history, matching something that was done all the way back during the 1979-1980 season by the Philadelphia Flyers.

That’s borderline hard to wrap your mind around. The Avalanche have only been beaten one time in 60 minutes all season as they improved to 19-1-6, good for 44 points and leading the league.

They’re a wagon right now, there’s no other way to slice it. And when you’re doing stuff the NHL hasn’t seen in 46 years, the whole hockey world is paying attention.
