Brent Burns didn’t consider retiring this offseason and now his agent thinks he looks like a rookie. The 41-year-old Colorado Avalanche defenseman turned back the clock on his look by trimming his beard and hair and getting some teeth — more akin to what he looked like before the 2004 NHL lockout when he was in the league than what he has the rest of his three-time All-Star career.

Burns, who is entering his 23rd year in the NHL, started growing out his beard about a dozen years ago while playing with the San Jose Sharks. There he did a famed ESPN Body issue photo shoot where his beard was front and center. This was around the time his career peaked on the ice, winning a Norris Trophy for the league’s top defenseman. So that look for Burns is burned into hockey fans brains.

You could argue Burns is one of the more recognizable NHL players because of his perpetual playoff beard. The evolution of his facial foliage even became its own thing to look forward to on every NHL photo day.

Burns enters this season as the NHL’s active leader in points (945) and games (1,579) among defensemen. He’ll have a chance to top Phil Kessel’s NHL record of 1,064 consecutive games-played this year if he can stay on the ice as he starts the campaign at 1,007 straight
