Sean Payton on if he took Broncos job to win championships: ‘That’s exactly right’

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is making his expectations clear.

After the Broncos wrapped up their first day of mandatory mini-camp on Tuesday, Payton was asked if he took the job in Denver to win championships.

“That’s exactly right,” Payton said.

The man in charge confirmed he’s not with the Broncos just to try to turn a previously struggling franchise around. He wants to win the Super Bowl in Denver. He’d be the first head coach in NFL history to win it all with two different teams.

Sean Payton hoisted the Lombardi Trophy with the New Orleans Saints after Super Bowl XLIV in February of 2010.

The Broncos went 10-7 a season ago, making the playoffs for the first time since 2015. And even though they got dominated in the playoffs by the Buffalo Bills, Payton was asked how they’re handling tasting success for the first time in a long time.

“I think pretty good. I think they have a high standard of how they see themselves and where we can be,” Payton said.

As for 2025, Sean Payton knows that the Broncos need to win games in chunks. That would help them try to capture the AFC West for the first time in a nearly a decade, wrestling it away from the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Now, a little bit of confidence always helps. And you get going, you win some games. Any team really that’s been worth their salt has always put a string of wins together. We need to start faster. The last two years we haven’t. But I like where we’re at right now,” Payton said.

Denver was 0-3 then 1-5 in 2023, Payton’s first year leading the team. Last season, they got off to an 0-2 start and at one point were 3-3. It’s clear Payton wants them playing better football in September and October.

If that happens, who knows how far the Broncos can go this year? One thing is clear that at 61-years-old, Sean Payton isn’t doing this for a good time. He’s doing it to try to win the whole thing.
