Ejiro Evero ‘wants to be a head coach’ but will it be with the Broncos?

Jan 5, 2023, 12:39 PM

The Denver Broncos have a young star coordinator who has the ambition of becoming an NFL head coach. With Denver’s coaching vacancy and Ejiro Evero proven coaching ability, could the two sides find what they’re looking for in-house?

According to oddsmakers, Evero is a longshot for a promotion in Denver—placing him outside the five most likely candidates for the Broncos head coaching gig. And with where the Broncos are, having hired three-straight first-time head coaches—who have all failed—it seems unlikely that Evero is the right choice. That becomes even more clear when you consider the Broncos biggest issue is offense, not the Evero-led stout defense.

But because that defense has been so good, many believe Evero, 41, will make for a great head coach someday. That is what Evero is aiming to do.

“I really truly mean this, I am 100% invested in finishing this year off and then just kind of taking those things as they come,” Evero said Thursday. “I do want to be a head coach, but the timing is not in my control. And I’ll just do what my job is right now, which is to be the defensive coordinator.”

Evero is a first-time defensive coordinator this year and added some insight into what getting that promotion and possibly another is like.

“As ready as you could be, but I don’t know if anybody’s ever ready to be a head coach in the NFL, you just got to figure it out,” Evero explained. “Same as being a DC, I don’t know if you’re ever ready to do it, and that’s just honest truth.”

Evero says he’s had conversations about becoming a head coach but not ones specifically about becoming the Broncos head man. He did turn down the interim head coaching role in Denver, out of respect for Nathaniel Hackett.

Dan Quinn, Sean Payton, and Evero’s former boss Jim Harbaugh are seemingly more probable to hold the whistle at Dove Valley come fall.
