Despite losses, Wilson won’t change his routine, jokes this isn’t baseball

The Broncos certainly need to change something.

Whether that be firing head coach Nathaniel Hackett or even general manager George Paton, ownership has some big decisions to make this offseason — or maybe even before that.

And while some fans have to started to wonder if the team should move on from QB Russell Wilson, that just isn’t financially feasible. Not after Paton gave him a $245 million contract this offseason. According to Spotrac, the Broncos would have $107 million in dead cap if they moved on from Wilson before next year, so it’s not happening.

But even if the person playing quarterback isn’t going to change, it’s fair to wonder if Wilson can change things to become a better player. At his press conference on Wednesday, the man under center for Denver was asked if he’s tempted to change his habits at all. You know, just to mix things up. Wilson says that won’t be happening.

“No. My routine, I’ve built (it) over 11 years of my career. In terms of how you go about it every day, what time you get here. I think that allows you to have confidence and play with confidence. And not lose it, even in the midst of ebbs and flows,” Wilson said.

The Broncos have had way more downs than ups this year, sitting on a 3-9 record and clearly one of the five worst teams in the NFL. They won’t get a high draft pick as a reward, since that selection will go back to Seattle thanks to the Wilson trade.

The QB knows guys change things around in other sports, just to try something new when clearly the old way isn’t working. Wilson says this isn’t baseball, a sports he’s wildly familiar with, and even brought up a Rockies legend.

“There’s the baseball approach that some guys like to change their batting gloves or change there cleats. There’s some guys that the next at bat — I know Todd Helton was a big superstitious guy — he’d always change his bat every other at bat. But for me, I’ve just always believed in consistency to your approach,” Wilson said.

So, there you have it. Wilson will stick with his current routine, even though it doesn’t appear to be working. He’s thrown just eight touchdown passes while the Broncos average an NFL worst 13.8 points per game.

Maybe Helton can give Wilson a call and tell him that sometimes, a change is indeed necessary.
