Pete Carroll has weak response on how Seattle fans should receive Wilson

Sep 8, 2022, 5:40 PM

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll could have taken the high road.

He did not.

When asked at his press conference how Seattle fans should receive Russell Wilson during their Week 1 matchup with the Broncos, Carroll was coy.

“You’re either competing or you’re not. I’m leaving it up to the 12s. It’s game time and we’re going for it, so however they take it, I’ll follow their lead on that,” Carroll said. “I mean, I’m not going to be involved with that kind of opportunity to react. So, I don’t have to make that decision. I’m going to see what happens, but I’ll leave it up to the 12s. I think they’ll know exactly what to do.”

The 12s, of course, are Seattle’s fan. That last sentence is Carroll egging them on to boo Wilson. You know, the QB who led the Seahawks to two Super Bowls, won one and made the Pro Bowl in nine out of 10 years during his time with Seattle.

After ESPN’s bombshell piece on Wednesday, it’s clear they never respected Wilson, so why start now? They tried to trade him multiple times, despite Wilson carrying a mediocre roster on his back the last several seasons.

Carroll could have easily said that Wilson was an all-time QB in Seattle and the franchise’s best. He could have told fans to stand and applaud and appreciate everything he did. Instead, he tried to pretend like them booing Wilson is about competing. He knew exactly what he was doing, trying to dump gasoline on something that just needs one more spark to explode.

The 70-year-old showed his true colors. Now all Wilson can do is make Carroll and his former fans eat crow by blowing them out at Lumen Field on Monday Night Football. Game on.
