Broncos corner Darby says “we do have the team” to win the Super Bowl

Expectations are high around Broncos headquarters these days.

That’s what happens when you add a future Hall of Fame quarterback like Russell Wilson to the mix.

And that means guys who Wilson won’t even be playing with on offense know they’re on a team that has the potential to be special. Broncos cornerback Ronald Darby met the media on Wednesday after Denver’s offseason activities rolled on, and said he’s not shying away from expectations at all.

“I know it’s going to be high, but each year, no matter what team I’m on, of course everybody wants to win the Super Bowl. We do have the team,” Darby said. “We’ve got the QB, the wide receivers, the running backs, the defense. So, from there, just continue to work each day.”

The defense that Darby is part of looks pretty similar to 2021, specifically in the secondary. Denver let Bryce Callahan walk in free agency after signing K’Waun Williams to take his place, but other than that the group should look similar.

“Yeah that’s a blessing right there to have both of your starting safeties back, especially when you’ve got vets like K-Jack (Kareem Jackson) and J (Justin Simmons). So, we got Pat (Surtain II) back (and) me. The room’s the same other than Bryce (Callahan). That’s a blessing,” Darby said.

Darby, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Broncos last offseason, was fine in 2021 but nothing special. He knows he needs to improve, specifically in one area of his game.

“Of course I want to get more turnovers. We all do. That’s one thing I’m going to focus on this year, get some I-N-Ts (interceptions). Technical stuff, just breaking on the ball differently. A couple of things like that. That can all be fixed though,” Darby said.

Darby had zero interceptions last year, but does have eight during his career. He had six total during his three seasons with the Eagles, including when they won the Super Bowl over Tom Brady and the Patriots. As Darby hunts his second championship ring, he knows the Broncos are capable of winning it all, but he also has to improve individually while the rest of the team gels.

For the first time in a long time, expectations are indeed sky high in Broncos Country. Buckle up.
