Broncos address another big need by signing slot cornerback from 49ers

Mar 22, 2022, 3:55 PM

The Denver Broncos have addressed one of their biggest remaining needs in free agency.

They’ve signed a slot cornerback.

K’Waun Williams has played seven years in the NFL, his first two with Cleveland and the last five with the San Francisco 49ers. In 97 career games (including postseason) Williams has five interceptions, 324 tackles, 12 forced fumbles and eight sacks. Williams played in all three playoff games with the 49ers last season and had an interception in their win over the Cowboys.

According to Pro Football Focus, Williams played 700 of his 827 snaps at cornerback last year in the slot for San Francisco. This almost assuredly closes the door on Bryce Callahan returning to Denver, since Williams plays a similar role. Patrick Surtain II and Ronald Darby project to start outside, with Williams in the slot.

While he might not be a household name, by all accounts Williams is a very solid NFL player. And for just $7M over the next two years, Broncos GM George Paton once again addressed a big need, this time without breaking the bank.
