CSU standout Trey McBride named unanimous All-American

Dec 15, 2021, 4:04 PM

Before making the jump from college to the NFL, Trey McBride needed to make history one more time at Colorado State.

The 2021 John Mackey Award winner — given to the nation’s top tight end — already holds school records for career receptions (157) and receiving yards (2,011) by a tight end. This past year, he set single season marks for receptions (90) and receiving yards (1,121) by a tight end as well.

But the Fort Morgan native has done something no other CSU Rams player has before — earning unanimous recognition as an All-American.

McBride had already garnered consensus All-American status before Wednesday, having been named a first-team All-American by at least three of five NCAA-recognized selectors — Football Writers Association of American, Sporting News, Associated Press and Walter Camp Football Foundation.

That alone put McBride in rarified air, as only four Rams have previously earned the distinction: Mike Bell, Greg Myers, Rashard Higgins and Michael Gallup.

But when the American Football Coaches Association named their team on Wednesday morning, with McBride as its first-team tight end, the CSU standout did something no other Ram had before.

In fact, no other offensive player in Mountain West history has reached unanimous status, as McBride becomes just the fifth ever in conference history.

“That’s very special, and to be the first in program history is such an honor,” McBride said in an exclusive with RamWire. “I am just so grateful for this university and the coaches who helped me get to this spot. This is so special, and something that will be in the history books forever.”
